AI receptionist vs IVR menu and voicemail.
Your callers say what they need in plain speech and Prime Assist books it before the call ends. An IVR menu and a voicemail box are cheap, they scale, and they resolve almost nothing.
From £150 a month including VAT
£125 plus VAT for 500 minutes, about 140 to 200 calls. New customers get the first three months free with a 12-month commitment.Note 1: new customer offer terms
What is the difference between an AI receptionist and an IVR phone menu?
An IVR asks the caller to classify themselves through a menu and then routes or records. It resolves nothing on its own: at the end of the tree there is either a queue, a voicemail box or a hang-up. An AI receptionist skips the menu entirely, asks the caller what they need in plain speech, and completes the task, booking the appointment, raising the job or capturing the enquiry in your system, before the call ends. IVR measures well internally because calls are counted as handled. Callers experience it as an obstacle, which is why abandonment sits inside menu trees.
An IVR and voicemail take every call. Only Prime Assist can resolve them.

| Caller has to classify themselves | No | Yes | No |
| Handles an unexpected request | Yes, or escalates | No | No |
| Simultaneous calls | All answered at once | Unlimited | Unlimited |
| Cost per call | Charged per minute from a prepaid bundle, so it varies with call length | Very low | Very low |
| Caller experience | Conversation | Menu tree | Recording |
| Books into your diary | Yes | No | No |
| Someone must action it later | No | Usually | Always |

| Suitable as a single emergency message | Overkill | Yes | Yes |
Menu trees optimise the wrong number
An IVR reduces the number of calls your team touches, which looks like success on a dashboard. It does not reduce the number of people who wanted something from you and did not get it. Those callers do not appear in your metrics at all, which is exactly why the problem persists for years.
Voicemail is a message from you, not to you
A caller with an urgent need who reaches voicemail can ring the next business instead, and those are the callers your marketing paid to attract.
Plain speech beats classification
Callers do not know your internal departments. They know their problem. Asking them to map it onto your org chart through four options and a hash key is a design failure that predates the technology to fix it. An AI voice agent takes the problem in the caller’s own words and works out where it belongs.
When a simple IVR is still right
If you have one number, one message and no diary, an IVR is honest and cheap. Out-of-hours emergency instructions, a temporary closure notice, or a single legal disclaimer are all fine as a recording. Keep those. What is not defensible in 2026 is using a menu tree as your primary way of handling business you want to win.
The short verdict
If your IVR ends in a queue or a voicemail box for calls you want to win, replace the front of it. Keep recordings for genuine announcements. The test is simple: at the end of the menu, does anything actually get done.
Questions buyers actually ask.
Ask us something elseCan I keep my IVR and add AI?
Yes. AI can answer first, with your existing routing kept behind it for specific departments and your emergency message retained as a recording.
Is an AI receptionist not just a fancier IVR?
The difference is the outcome: an IVR ends in a route, a queue or a recording. An AI voice agent ends in a completed booking, a raised job or a captured enquiry written into your system, or a warm transfer to a human.
Do callers prefer speaking to a machine or pressing buttons?
Callers want resolution. Between four menu levels and a conversation that books the appointment, choose the conversation. Between a machine that resolves nothing and a human, choose the human. Design accordingly.
Will it work with our phone system?
In most cases calls are simply diverted or routed to Prime Assist, so your existing numbers and hardware stay as they are. Confirm your telephony setup with us before launch.
What about accessibility?
Removing a menu tree helps many callers, including those who find multi-level menus difficult. Existing accessibility routes and alternative channels should stay in place alongside it.

Three ways to test us. Only one of them involves talking to a human.
Buying voice AI on a slide deck is how people end up with something that fails on the first awkward caller. So we made the product itself easy to try before you commit to anything.

Ring the line, choose a scenario, for example a dental practice or a trades business, and talk to Prime Assist the way one of your callers would. Ask it to book you in, then try to catch it out. No form and no email address.

Put a number on your missed calls
Two questions show the calls you miss today next to the same calls with Prime Assist, where every call is answered at once. Add your own figures to see what they are worth, what answering them would cost from £150 a month including VAT, and how many of your bookings that price equals.
